Republic Day 2017 will be a solid box office clash between the two renowned Khans and most famous Hrithik Roshan (Kaabil Movie) – Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan and Hrithik Roshan. The two will be up for the release of their respective movies, Raees and Kaabil and Sultan. So we are ready for a Sultan versus Raees versus Kaabil situation at the box office the next Eid. Sultan is being produced by Yash Raj Films while Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar are producing Raees. While the fans might see the Sultan movie release and Raees movie release as a fascinating thing, this is not bring considered a healthy sign at the box office.
Shah Rukh Khan starrer Raees will be clashing with Salman Khan’s Sultan and they both have announced Eid 2016 for their films’ release. This Sultan vs Raees box office clash could not have been foreseen by anyone and no one could have imagined SRK and Hrithik clashing on Republic Day 2017. Since both the actors are superstars and the movies are big budget ventures, the stakes are huge. This Sultan-Raees clash is not being seen as a healthy trend as the respective Studios might be seen fighting it out for theatres and show timings.
While some take this move as a pessimistic one, others feel that this won’t hamper the industry’s progress and won’t be necessarily damaging. This is because Raees and Sultan release on Eid and a festive period can easily accommodate two big budget movies. All said however, the stakes still remain too high.
The Kaabil-Raees box office clash cannot be avoided now as the makers are adamant at releasing the pictures on 26 January 2017 only. This is the time in the industry when Studios as well as actors are targeting at Rs. 300 crores in the domestic market and also setting new benchmarks overseas. If the clash, somehow takes place, it will act as a speed breaker. In the words of trade analyst Komal Nahata, “If Raees and Kaabil indeed clash for Republic Day 2017; it will not be good for both the films as they will cut into each other’s collections. I feel better sense will eventually prevail and the release date of one of the two films will shift from Republic Day to another day.”
The Eid 2016 release will be something to watch out for. Since a major portion of the box office collections every year depends on the Khans and their releases, the Sultan-Raees clash might prove to be suicidal. After the success of Bajrangi Bhaijaan that released on Eid 2015, the box office collections soared and hence no one would like to miss the irony of the two Khan superstars clashing. Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan’s campaign was commenced by Shah Rukh Khan and now irony has it that the two would be battling it out next Eid.
The movies have gained so much hype even before their release; we could well imagine the state when they near their releases respectively. The Sultan Raees movie clash has acted like advance publicity for both. We hope that Sultan and Raees and Kaabil don’t release together and either of them gets rescheduled.
